Exotics - Fan palm - I was
laying on a sunbed (in the shade of course, I am English) on holiday in
Egypt when taking a break from my book, I looked around and saw this helping
to shade me from the sun. I love the nature-meets-abstract feeling of it.
While I'd like to be able to grow these in my garden in Cambridgeshire,
I'm not even going to bother trying as they wouldn't be half as good as
they are here - far better to use the space for one of the hundred plants
that will grow well here and I haven't got yet. |

Exotics - Bougainvillea - you'll often
see these wonderful vines planted as ornamentals around the world in warmer
climates. They are quite undemanding of conditions as long as it's not too
cold. Some species can even stand it down to freezing point for short periods
as long as the roots are fairly dry. They are a little unruly in habit,
but can be trained quite well up walls and over arbours. Discovered in the
jungles of South America by Louis Antoine de Bougainville. |

Exotics - Edible dates hanging from a date
palm. usually dates hang close to the palm as in the next picture,
but this particular bunch were a little way out. I like the surreal look
of this picture as if they are suspended in space by cropping out the tree
with the camera. |

Exotics - Date palm. When the palm
has grown sufficiently large to start fruiting it throws out these large,
and rather extravagant to the size of the plant, peduncles bearing the edible
dates for which this palm is so valued. |
