A good substitute for the ubiquitous Lleylandii, similar in looks, but slower growing and more manageable. It can get equally out of hand and oversized however, it just takes longer to do so.

 Height and spread: 3m x 2m (10ft x 6ft) Elwoodii, can be 15m+ height and 5m+ width (40ft x 15ft) for the species, take care when buying as you could end up with something that is very nearly a Lleylandii

• Position: full sun or partial shade

• Soil: moist, well-drained neutral to slightly acid soil

• Rate of growth: slow-growing

• Other Features: contact with the foliage may aggravate skin allergies

• Hardiness: fully hardy

• Garden care: Remove any competing leaders that appear in spring, cutting out the weaker or crooked shoot cleanly at its base

• Uses - Specimen / Hedging / Architectural / mixed border

• Planting distance when used for hedging: 60cm, 24"

• Clipped height: 1.2-2.5m, 4-8ft. can be larger

• Number of times to clip per season and when: 2, spring and early autumn

• Responds to renovation?: No

• Pruning: Non-hedging plants require no regular pruning. If pruning is required, don't cut back into brown wood, always leave green on the surface, the plant will never grow green again from the brown. May develop a competing leader after damage, frost or physical, remove the weakest of these or the plant will become unbalanced.
