Penstemons are a member of the splendidly named Scrophulariaceae which in itself is enough reason to grow them as far as I'm concerned.

They are valuable medium to tall border plants for a bright sunny position. Mulch in the autumn in cold frosty areas and deadhead regularly to maintain a flowering show unless you want to collect the seed. Propagation can also be by spring division or softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in spring and summer.
